Oribasius: Testimonia

Library › Greek: History › Testimonia

Testimonia gathers ancient reports about Oribasius of Pergamon, physician and friend of the emperor Julian in the fourth century AD, as a historical writer. The single testimony here comes from the historian Eunapius, who says that Oribasius, present at all of Julian's deeds, urged him to write their history and prepared a detailed memoir of the emperor's actions for the purpose.

This passage is the main evidence that Oribasius wrote a memoir of Julian, now lost, which Eunapius used for his History. It shows the close link between the court physician and the pagan emperor, and it sheds light on the sources behind the ancient accounts of Julian's reign.
