Library › Greek: History › Testimonia
Testimonia gathers two brief ancient notices about Strabo of Amasia as a writer. The first is the Suda entry, which calls him a philosopher from Amasia who lived under Tiberius and wrote a Geography in seventeen books. The second is a marginal note in one manuscript of the Suda, recording that Strabo also wrote a history of the period after Polybius in forty-three books.
These short notices are among the few ancient statements about Strabo's life and works. The second is especially valuable, since it is evidence for the scale of his lost Historical Commentaries and for its place as a continuation of Polybius, alongside the history of Posidonius. They are useful companions to the fragments of that history and to the Geography.
