Aristides, Aelius: Orationes 28

Library › Greek: Oratory & Rhetoric › Orationes 28

Generations of Greek schoolboys learned prose composition by imitating Aelius Aristides, whose orations entered the select canon of authors deemed worthy of lifelong study. Among them is the Ancient Greek speech numbered Orationes 28, part of the large corpus this second-century AD orator left to posterity.

Canonical status of that kind is rare for a post-classical author and speaks to the esteem his successors felt for him. For today’s students the corpus offers finely wrought imperial Greek together with a living picture of the culture that produced it.
