Library › Greek: Geography & Travel › On the Rivers of Macedonia (Fragment)
On the Rivers of Macedonia is known only from a single citation. Herodian's Catholic Prosody, as preserved in a Vienna manuscript published by Herbert Hunger in 1967, notes that Kaunos was a river of Macedonia and names as its source the first book of Antigenes' On the Rivers of Macedonia. The work is otherwise lost, and little is known of its author, whose date and origin are uncertain.
The notice is a reminder of the many specialised geographical treatises that once existed and now survive only as a name and a book number in grammarians and lexicographers. It records an otherwise obscure Macedonian river and shows that regional river geography was a subject of scholarly writing in its own right.
