Echephylidas: Eliaca (Fragments)

Library › Greek: History › Eliaca (Fragments)

Echephylidas was a Greek historian of Elis, the region of Olympia, whose work was called the Eliaca. Little is known of him and his date is uncertain. The work is lost, and this page gathers a few fragments preserved by the grammarian Herodian and later grammatical writers, who cited him when discussing the spelling and accentuation of names and words.

The fragments are small, but they preserve names from Elean legend, such as Alasyos, and show that Elis, like many Greek regions, had its own local historians. They also illustrate how ancient grammarians preserved scraps of lost histories while discussing the accentuation of rare words.
