Hermetica: Asclepius (Greek Words)

Library › Greek: Philosophy › Asclepius (Greek Words)

The Asclepius is a Hermetic dialogue between Hermes Trismegistus and his disciple Asclepius, surviving complete only in a Latin version of a lost Greek original known as the Perfect Discourse. This text is not a continuous reading text: it gathers the handful of Greek words that appear in the Latin Asclepius, such as a Greek heading for the book, and, in chapters 19 and 40, terms like ousiarches (ruler of being) and heimarmene (fate).

The Greek terms left untranslated in the Latin version show which technical concepts the translator kept in their original form, and they give a glimpse of the vocabulary of the lost Greek text. For readers of the Hermetica they are a small but useful link between the Greek Corpus Hermeticum and the Latin tradition.
