J. P. Naillosius: Epistola ad Henricum Bullingerum

Library › Latin: Letters › Epistola ad Henricum Bullingerum

This short letter, written at Basel on 8 March, is from J. P. Naillosius, evidently a French-speaking Protestant refugee, to Heinrich Bullinger, chief minister of the Zurich church. Naillosius writes to tell Bullinger of his situation, owing him so much and wishing to hear of his welfare. He went to Bern and delivered Bullinger’s letter to Jodocus, who helped him zealously, but no post was then vacant. He then went to Basel, where he found no friends and, as he puts it, hardly any Christians, trusting that the Lord will send him bread from heaven.

He may write again from France. He reports that he has translated a book of Bullinger’s into French and hopes to publish it within a few days, and sends greetings to Bullinger’s wife and household church. The letter, about 145 words, illustrates the precarious life of religious refugees seeking employment in the Swiss Reformed cities, and the early spread of Bullinger’s works in French.

Librum tuum in Gallicam linguam traduxi; spero in lucem intra paucos dies emittere.
Tu interim, mi D. Bullingere ualeas; uxorem et ecclesiam domus tuae meo nomine saluta, quibus omnibus uobis pax sit.
