Library › Latin: Letters › Epistola ad Antonium Fratrem (25 May 1558)
This letter of 25 May 1558 from Mihovil Vrančić is addressed with full titles to his brother Antun Vrančić, bishop of Eger, perpetual count of Heves and counsellor of the emperor. Mihovil reports that everyone at court is waiting for Antun and wondering why he sends neither letters nor messengers about his return or his long delay. He himself goes out less than usual, since he has no answer to give to those who ask, and confesses that he is ashamed and weary of it.
With gentle mockery he observes that if he were merely Antun’s agent he would deserve more frequent letters, just to show he belonged to him, and fears the proverb ‘honours change manners’ may prove true: when Antun was in Constantinople, before he was surrounded by horsemen and foot soldiers, he wrote more often. He adds that since the loss of Tata things are quiet, and only the prince knows what should be done. The letter shows the affectionate and teasing relationship between the brothers.
