Philochorus: Testimonia

Library › Greek: History › Testimonia

These are ancient testimonies about Philochorus, the Athenian historian of the late fourth and early third centuries BC. The main entry, from the Byzantine lexicon known as the Suda, names his father Cycnus and his wife Archestrate, calls him a seer and interpreter of omens, and says he was killed by Antigonus after being accused of favouring the Ptolemies. It also lists his many works, headed by the Atthis in seventeen books.

The testimonies are the main evidence for Philochorus' life and for the range of his writings, nearly all of which are lost. They show a scholar who combined religious office with historical research, and they help to frame the surviving fragments of his Atthis and his works on Athenian religion.
