Volumnius: Fragment

Library › Latin: Lyric & Elegy › Fragment

A single short phrase of verse attributed to a poet named Volumnius, preserved in a later quotation: ‘the dish of creaking (or hissing) cabbage-sprouts will be given’. It appears to come from a description of a meal, perhaps in a satirical or epigrammatic poem.

Nothing certain is known of the author, who may be identical with one of the Volumnii of the late Republic. The fragment is preserved for its vocabulary, especially the word cyma for the young shoots of cabbage, and is one of the smallest remains of lost Latin poetry.
