Library › Greek: Grammar & Reference › On the Word ὕδωρ (Fragments)
On the Word ὕδωρ (Fragments) preserves two citations of a lost one-book monograph by Aelius Herodian, the Alexandrian grammarian active in Rome in the second century AD, on the noun ὕδωρ, 'water'. Both are quoted by Choeroboscus. One rules that datives such as χαρίεσι should be written with a single sigma; the other notes that neuters in -αρ with ω before the ending, such as μῶμαρ and νῶκαρ, are indeclinable.
Small as it is, the set shows how a monograph on one irregular noun could open onto wider questions of declension and spelling. It is typical of the many specialist studies by Herodian known today only through the quotations of Byzantine grammarians.
