Ratpert of Saint Gall: Poemata Varia

Library › Latin: Lyric & Elegy › Poemata Varia

This small item contains short Latin poems from Saint Gall printed by Migne after the Casus sancti Galli, which he wrongly assigned to Paschasius Radbertus. The surviving text gives an epitaph in elegiac couplets for Hildegard, daughter of King Louis the German, who had vowed herself to God and died at twenty-eight, and verses recording that she founded a church together with her father. The headings also name a poem for the reception of a queen.

The poems belong to the circle of Saint Gall in the late ninth century, whose verse is associated with Ratpert, author of the Casus, and they reflect the close links between the abbey and the East Frankish royal family. They are very brief, but preserve a memorial to a Carolingian princess who became an abbess. Their brevity means they are best read alongside the Casus with which they were transmitted.
