Hrabanus Maurus: Carmina de Diversis

Library › Latin: Myth, Hymn & Religion › Carmina de Diversis

This collection gathers the shorter poems of Hrabanus Maurus, abbot of Fulda and later archbishop of Mainz, one of the most learned Carolingian churchmen. Its many pieces include verses to Popes Paschal and Gregory, to bishops such as Baturich of Regensburg and Gerfrid, to friends, and prayers to God. The sample opens with lines accompanying his book in praise of the Holy Cross, sent to Gerfrid, and continues with a penitential prayer in elegiacs in which the poet confesses sins of tongue, mind and hand and asks to be rescued from the flames of hell.

Other poems are rhythmical, such as a piece in short lines retelling the fall of the rebel angel and the creation of plants, stars, animals and finally man, made in God’s image to rule the world. The collection also contains epitaphs, inscriptions for churches and altars, and verse letters. It shows the range of Hrabanus’s verse and is a rich source for his network of correspondents and for Carolingian religious poetry.
