This short appendix gathers documents and inscriptions concerning Peter Damian, the eleventh-century hermit, reformer and cardinal. The first is a privilege of Pope Leo IX granted to Peter while still living, as prior of the hermitage of Ocri in the territory of Sassina, confirming the hermitage forever, forbidding anyone to subject it to secular rule or to another monastery, though allowing it to become a monastery itself, and placing a parish church under it. There follow a letter of Alexander II to the bishops of Gaul about Peter, a further piece, a passage from Desiderius of Monte Cassino (later Pope Victor III), and inscriptions from Peter’s tomb and from the cathedral of Faenza.

The documents show Peter Damian’s standing with the reforming popes and the memory of him preserved at Faenza, where he died and was buried. Leo IX’s privilege is an example of papal protection for a small eremitic community: it forbids subjecting the hermitage to another monastery because, as it says, such subjection usually means a place’s destruction. The middle passage, from a papal letter, refers to the simoniac invader of the church of Orléans, illustrating the reform concerns of the time.
