Vulgate: Luke

Library › Latin: Early Christian Writings › Luke

The Gospel according to Luke is the longest of the four Gospels and the first half of a two-volume work that continues in the Acts of the Apostles. Addressed to a patron named Theophilus, it tells of the births of John the Baptist and Jesus, the ministry in Galilee, a long journey to Jerusalem filled with parables, and the Passion and Resurrection. The Latin text is the Vulgate, the revision of the Old Latin Gospels that Jerome made at Rome for Pope Damasus around AD 383, correcting it against Greek manuscripts.

Luke alone preserves the parables of the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son and the canticles that entered the daily prayer of the Church — the Magnificat, the Benedictus and the Nunc Dimittis, all known to the West by their Vulgate opening words. Its attention to the poor, to women and to outsiders, and its polished narrative style, made it a favourite of preachers and artists throughout the Middle Ages.

25

35
