Vulgate: Genesis

Library › Latin: Early Christian Writings › Genesis

Genesis is the first book of the Bible and of the Pentateuch traditionally ascribed to Moses. Its fifty chapters run from the creation of the world in six days, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, the Flood and the tower of Babel, to the histories of the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and the story of Joseph in Egypt. The Latin text is the Vulgate, which Jerome translated directly from the Hebrew at Bethlehem around the turn of the fifth century.

Genesis supplied the West with its account of creation, of the origin of sin and of the descent of nations, and few books have been more often commented on. Augustine wrote on it repeatedly, and its opening words, ‘In principio creavit Deus caelum et terram’, are among the best known in Latin. Jerome’s version, preferring the Hebrew to the Septuagint, became the standard Latin text and left phrases throughout medieval and later literature.
